Identification of microRNA-181 as a promising biomarker for predicting the poor survival in colorectal cancer

Cancer Medicine Sep 02, 2019

Peng Q, Yao W, Yu C, et al. - Since a possible link between microRNA-181 (miR-181) and prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC) has been shown in a series of investigations, with inconsistent findings, researchers performed a comprehensive meta-analysis and an integrative bioinformatics analysis to draw inference from the current available evidence, gain clarity on the preliminary prognostic value, and to determine the underlying biological function of miR-181 in CRC patients. Significantly poorer overall survival rates were observed in correlation with elevated expression levels of miR-181. Meanwhile, they discovered target genes of miR-181, which were enriched into many significant gene ontology classes and signaling pathways including miRNAs in cancer, pathways in cancer, proteoglycans in cancer, colorectal cancer, FoxO signaling pathway, PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, VEGF signaling pathway, HIF-1 signaling pathway, mTOR signaling pathway, and cAMP signaling pathway, which were corroborated highly implicated in the start and progress of CRC. In this study, a promising role of miR-181 was suggested as a biomarker with predictive utility for the prognosis for CRC patients.
