Hyperglycemia in non-obese patients with type 2 diabetes is associated with low muscle mass: The Multicenter Study for Clarifying Evidence for Sarcopenia in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus

Journal of Diabetes Investigation Jun 06, 2019

Sugimoto K, et al. - In patients with type 2 diabetes, researchers ascertained if glycemic control was correlated with sarcopenia, defined as weak grip strength or slow usual gait speed and low skeletal mass index. Participants in the study were 746 patients with type 2 diabetes (average age 69.9 years) and 2,067 considered “older general population” (average age 68.2 years). Of type 2 diabetes patients, 52 were diagnosed with sarcopenia. Findings revealed that glycated hemoglobin level was linked to low skeletal mass index vs weak grip strength or slow gait speed. There was a linear increase seen in frequency of sarcopenia with glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level, especially in lean individuals, which was independent of major covariates, including anthropometric factors and duration of diabetes. The authors concluded that poor glycemic control was linked to low muscle mass in patients with diabetes. No significant association with a better glycemic profile has been seen in the general population.
