Hospital variation of 30-day readmission rate following transcatheter aortic valve implantation
Heart Mar 01, 2021
Ando T, Ashraf S, Kuno T, et al. - Researchers used the 2017 US Nationwide Readmission Database to determine if there exists hospital-level variance in 30-day readmission rate in the contemporary transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) era. They found 44,899 TAVI from 338 hospitals. For unadjusted 30-day readmission rate and 30-day risk-standardised readmission rate (RSRR), the range was 2.0%–33.3% and 9.4%–15.3%, respectively. Median 30-day RSRR was estimated to be 11.8%. Findings revealed that a significant hospital-level variation existed in 30-day RSRR post-TAVI. Experts found that 9.6%, 1.9% and 3.8% of the variability in hospital readmission rate was explained by patient, hospital and economic factors, respectively. There is a need for further measures to mitigate this variation in the readmission rate.
