Hospital utilization and expenditures among a nationally representative sample of Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries 2 years after receipt of an Annual Wellness Visit
Preventive Medicine Oct 23, 2019
Misra A, et al. - Researchers investigated the influence of the Annual Wellness Visit (AWV) receipt, which offers an opportunity to link beneficiaries to cancer screenings and immunizations, on outcomes while accounting for the healthy user influence. Using 2013–2017 Medicare claims data, comparisons were performed among a 5% random sample of Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries with and without AWV use in 2014, with respect to hospital utilization and total expenditures. They propensity-score matched 228,053 AWV users to 228,053 nonusers. Findings revealed a marginally significant decrease in Medicare expenditure 12 months and significant declines 24 months following the visit among AWV users vs non-users. Overall, AWV affords a possibility for providers to concentrate on prevention and geriatric requirements not included in typical office visits. Increased revenue, more stable patient populations, and stronger provider-patient associations have been noted by practices using AWVs. Despite low utilization, it is steadily increasing over time.
