HIV testing barriers and intervention strategies among men, transgender women, female sex workers and incarcerated persons in the Caribbean: A systematic review

Sexually Transmitted Infections Sep 17, 2019

Hamilton A, Shin S, Taggart T, et al. - Researchers performed a systematic review to compile data on HIV testing barriers and intervention strategies among Caribbean populations. In addition, they suggested future research endeavors designed to improve rates of HIV testing in the region. They identified eligible 21 studies for inclusion. Upon analysis, they found that HIV testing rates across the Caribbean were unacceptably low for several reasons, primarily: lack of confidentiality, access to testing sites, stigma, discrimination, poverty and low HIV risk perception. These barriers were often related to delayed HIV testing and delayed treatment initiation and decreased survival rate. These findings emphasize the necessity for the implementation of intervention strategies addressing these barriers—including offering rapid HIV testing at clinics, and HIV testing outreach by trained providers and peers.
