HIV seroconversion and types of relationships among men who have sex with men: A cohort study in china
Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes Mar 08, 2020
Sun X, Wang C, Zhao K, et al. - Researchers aimed at assessing the role of regular sexual partners and risky sexual behavior in contributing to incident HIV infection among men who have sex with men (MSM). From July 2011 to August 2017, 1,218 HIV-negative men who reported having anal or oral homosexual encounters in the past 6 months were recruited and were followed up every 3 months for 2 visits. Among these, the HIV seroconversion rate was 3.66/100 person-years. This suggests a high incidence among MSM in China. Increased seroconversion risk was observed in correlation with unprotected sex with steady but not committed partners highlighting the significance of expanding safer sex education and training for MSM to minimize unsafe sexual behaviors, including the awareness that casual partners are not the only source of infection.
