HIV-related risk behaviors and HIV testing among people with sensory disabilities in the United States

International Journal of STD & AIDS Jun 05, 2020

Olakunde BO, et al. - Via performing secondary data analysis of the 2016 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, the prevalence of HIV-related risk behaviors and HIV testing were investigated among people with visual and/or hearing impairments in the United States. In addition, these data were compared with those of people without any impairments. Participants with visual, hearing, both visual and hearing, and no impairments had HIV-related risk behavior prevalence of 7.1%, 3.9%, 3.5%, and 5.9%, respectively. HIV testing was 39.7% among those with visual impairment and 28.9% among those with hearing impairment. Nearly 26.8% of the respondents with both impairments and 38.0% of those with no impairments had ever tested for HIV. Compared with those without any impairments, respondents with hearing impairment had significantly higher odds of ever testing for HIV, after controlling for sociodemographic characteristics, healthcare access, and HIV-related risk behaviors. Findings emphasize the necessity for targeted interventions meeting the unique needs of people with visual and/or hearing impairments to decrease HIV-related risk behaviors and improve uptake of HIV testing.
