The Lancet Infectious Diseases Mar 06, 2020
Mir F, et al. - In response to a report of an unusually large number of pediatric HIV diagnoses in Larkana, Pakistan, an HIV screening camp for all ages was established in April 2019. Researchers here investigated the clinical profile of the children who filed for HIV care. They reviewed outbreak responses from the government, academia, and UN agencies in Larkana, Sindh, Pakistan in this cross-sectional study. HIV testing was performed on 31,239 individuals from April 24, to July 15, 2019; among these, 930 (3%) tested positive for HIV. Age was less than 16 years for 763/930 (82%) and age 5 years and below was reported for 604/930 (79%). Among children in Pakistan, the unprecedented nature of the HIV outbreak was observed; there was a 54% increase in pediatric HIV diagnoses over the past 13 years. Young children younger than 5 years were profoundly affected in the outbreak, with a predominance of boys.
