HIV disease severity is sensitive to temporal changes in alcohol use: A national study of VA patients with HIV
Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes Jul 01, 2019
Williams EC, et al. - Given the influences of alcohol use on HIV disease severity, researchers examined if changes in alcohol use modify HIV disease severity among people with HIV (PWH). From the Veterans Aging Cohort Study, they identified pairs of AUDIT-C screens within 9-15 months (February 1, 2008–September 30, 2014) among PWH. Most of 23,297 PWH (76,202 observations) did not report alcohol use (51%) or had low-level (38%) of alcohol use initially. No ensuing change was evident in most (54%), while 21% increased and 24% decreased their drinking. In this national sample, those with stable alcohol use (primarily those with no use) generally showed the greatest improvement in HIV severity.
