Sexually Transmitted Diseases Dec 05, 2019
Gabster A, Pascale JM, Cislaghi B, et al. - A population-based cross-sectional, questionnaire study was carried out among school-going adolescents aged 14 to 19 years (n = 700) in order to examine prevalence and risk factors of sexually transmitted infection (STI) among adolescents of the Comarca Ngäbe-Buglé indigenous region of Panama. Sexual experience was reported by 536 individuals. Chlamydia trachomatis was irrespectively related to being women and high-titer active syphilis with being men. Bacterial vaginosis was related to sexual behavior (≥ three-lifetime sex partners) and HPV with sexual experience. In conclusion, in rural Panama, school-going indigenous adolescents have a strong STI burden and hence, targeted STI screening is needed.
