High nutrition risk is associated with higher risk of dysphagia in advanced age adults newly admitted to hospital

Nutrition & Dietetics Sep 20, 2017

Popman A, et al. - This study investigated the prevalence of nutrition risk and related risk factors among adults of advanced age newly admitted to hospital. Over two-thirds of study participants had malnutrition or were at risk of malnutrition, and a third were at risk of dysphagia. A positive correlation of nutrition risk with low BMI and grip strength, and a negative correlation with dysphagia risk was observed. Overall, it seemed crucial to screen these patients, especially those identified to be malnourished or at nutrition risk, for dysphagia risk.
