High incidence and low case detection rate among contacts of tuberculosis cases in Shanghai, China
BMC Infectious Diseases Apr 17, 2019
Guo J, et al. - Researchers assessed the impact of a contact investigation strategy by assessing the incidence of tuberculosis and the case detection rate among contacts of tuberculosis patients. Among a total of 8,137 contacts, they identified 69 cases of pulmonary tuberculosis after an average follow-up of 2.6 years during the period from 2010 to 2014. Compared with the general population, a higher risk of pulmonary tuberculosis was observed among contacts; however, contact investigation led to the detection of only approximately 22% of the incident cases. Therefore, the investigators recommended improving the contact investigation strategy for better detection of potential pulmonary tuberculosis cases.
