High cure rate of periprosthetic hip joint infection with a multidisciplinary team approach using standardized two-stage exchange
Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research Mar 18, 2019
Akgun D, et al. - In this single-center prospective cohort study from March 2013 to May 2015, researchers examined 84 individuals to study the success rate of treatment (treated as per standardized algorithm with a multidisciplinary team approach) of infected hip prosthesis cases. They reported coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) followed by Staphylococcus aureus and Propionibacterium, the most common isolated microorganisms. After 3 years, the Kaplan-Meier estimated infection-free survival was 89.3% with 30 subjects at risk. They concluded the achievement of high infect eradication rates using a standardized 2-stage exchange supported by a multidisciplinary approach.
