High 30-day readmission rates associated with Clostridium difficile infection
American Journal of Infection Control Feb 22, 2019
Verheyen E, et al. - Researchers performed a retrospective study of data from the 2013 Nationwide Readmissions Database of patients with a primary diagnosis of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) and re-hospitalization within 30-days to determine national rates, leading causes, and predictive factors for hospital readmission for CDI. Observations revealed readmission within 30 days for one in five patients admitted with C. difficile. Recurrent C difficile is identified to be the leading cause of readmission. they noted increased C difficile readmission risk in correlation with female sex, renal disease, and anemia. Increased C difficile readmission risk was noted with discharge home, as opposed to a facility.
