Hepatitis B vaccine knowledge and self-reported vaccination status among healthcare workers in a conflict region in northeastern Nigeria

Therapeutic Advances in Vaccines Jan 23, 2020

Dayyab FM, et al. - Given the hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is highly endemic in Nigeria, researchers undertook this cross-sectional study to analyze the knowledge, self-reported vaccination status, as well as the intention of healthcare workers to receive hepatitis B vaccine. This inquiry was performed among medical practitioners, nurses, laboratory workers, health attendants, pharmacists, and radiographers working at a tertiary referral center in conflict-ravaged northeastern Nigeria. There were 182 participants in total. Among those, good knowledge of HBV was reported in 151 (82.97%), good knowledge of hepatitis B vaccine in 81 (44.51%), 85 (46.70%) were vaccinated against HBV by the least dose, and 33 (18.13%) had a complete hepatitis B vaccination status. The data highlight that the level of awareness, as well as uptake of the hepatitis B vaccine among the healthcare workers, was suboptimal, which suggests the necessity for plans to ensure the availability of the hepatitis B vaccine in conflict settings as well as the requirement for vaccinology training.
