Hepatitis B infection in the general population of China: A systematic review and meta-analysis
BMC Infectious Diseases Oct 04, 2019
Wang H, Men P, Xiao Y, et al. - The lack of updated data on hepatitis B in China makes assessing the current prevalence and burden of the disease inadequate. Researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the current prevalence and burden of hepatitis B in the general population of China. They included 27 studies in the meta-analysis. As per estimates, the general population of China had the hepatitis B virus (HBV) pooled prevalence of 6.89% from 2013 to 2017, which could be extrapolated to an approximated population of 84 million living with HBsAg in 2018. Males relative to females had higher prevalence of HBV infection (5.88% vs 5.05%), and rural areas vs urban areas had a higher prevalence (5.86% vs 3.29%). Western provinces were reported to have the highest prevalence of HBV infection (8.92, 95% CI: 7.19–10.64%). The prevalence of HBV infection was nearly 7% in adults older than 20 years, which was higher than that in children. Based on these findings, they recommend implementing the blocking of mother-to-infant hepatitis B transmission and projects including timely birth dose of hepatitis B vaccine within 24 h. Additionally, they recommend implementing various control measures in different provinces across China.
