Hepatitis A vaccine uptake among men who have sex with men from a time-limited vaccination programme in Melbourne in 2018
Sexually Transmitted Infections Jul 31, 2019
Burrell S, Vodstrcil LA, Fairley CK, et al. - After an outbreak of hepatitis A among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM) in Victoria, Australia, in 2017, a free hepatitis A vaccination program focused on all Victorian MSM was started by the Victorian government in 2018. Researchers investigated MSM in a sexual health clinic in Melbourne for hepatitis A vaccine uptake. In 2018 9,582 MSM attended Melbourne Sexual Health Centre; of these, 61.3% self-reported already being immune to hepatitis A. Receipt of at least one dose of the hepatitis A vaccine on the day of attendance was reported in 62.7% of the 3,713 remaining eligible men. Receipt of the vaccine was reported more frequently by MSM taking pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) vs MSM not living with HIV and not taking PrEP. Immunity among the MSM population would improve with the continuation of the targeted hepatitis A vaccination program to prevent ongoing transmission and the likelihood of future outbreaks.
