HbA1c variability and diabetic peripheral neuropathy in type 2 diabetic patients

Cardiovascular Diabetology Apr 14, 2018

Su JB, et al. - In this cross-sectional study, the association of haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) variability with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) was investigated in patients with type 2 diabetes. A significant increase was noted in the proportion of patients with DPN, from 6.9% in the first to 19.1% in the second and 28.5% in the third tertile of coefficient of variation of HbA1c (CV-HbA1c). In receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, 15.15% was defined as the optimal cutoff value of CV-HbA1c to indicate DPN, and its corresponding sensitivity and specificity were 66.67% and 65.73%, respectively. Overall, a close relation of increased HbA1c variability to DPN suggested that it could be considered as a potent indicator for DPN in type 2 diabetic patients.
