Hand-to-genital and genital-to-genital transmission of human papillomaviruses between male and female sexual partners (HITCH): A prospective cohort study

The Lancet Infectious Diseases Mar 05, 2019

Malagón T, et al. - Considering the hypothesised hand-to-genital transmission mode for human papillomavirus (HPV) of the Alphapapillomavirus genus, researchers sought the relative importance of hand-to-genital and genital-to-genital HPV transmission between sexual partners in this prospective cohort study. Female university students aged 18–24 years and their male sexual partners in Montreal, QC, Canada (2005–11) were recruited and followed in this work. Valid hand samples were provided by 264 women and 291 men. As per findings, hand-to-genital contact seems not involved in HPV transmission. Genital HPV infections in the majority are caused by genital-to-genital sexual transmission.
