Halo gravity traction can mitigate preoperative risk factors and early surgical complications in complex spine deformity
Spine Apr 25, 2019
Iyer S, et al. - Researchers performed a retrospective review of prospective cohort of 96 patients treated with halo-gravity traction (HGT) before primary surgery, in order to examine if HGT has a role in reducing preoperative surgical risk. Findings suggest that in pediatric patients with complex spinal deformity, the operative risk could be quantified using the FOCOS Score (FS). Preoperative HGT improves curve magnitude, lowers three-column osteotomies use, and improves body mass index thereby could lead to a reduction in FS and surgical risk. They identified a predictive value of a reduction in FS after HGT for the lower rate of surgical complications.
