Guideline-directed medical therapy in elderly patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction: A cohort study
BMJ Open Feb 16, 2020
Seo WW, Park JJ, Park HA, et al. - In a large prospective cohort, the clinical characteristics and treatment strategies for elderly individuals with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) were evaluated. Researchers recruited a total of 2,045 individuals with HFrEF who were aged 65 years or older from the KorAHF registry. They obtained all-cause mortality data by searching medical records, national insurance data or national death records. It was noted that both beta-blockers and RAS inhibitors were applied in 892 individuals, beta-blockers only in 228 individuals, renin-angiotensin system (RAS) inhibitors only in 642 individuals and neither beta-blockers nor RAS inhibitors in 283 individuals. In elderly and very elderly HFrEF individuals, guideline-directed medical therapy was correlated with reduced 3-year all-cause mortality.
