Gram-negative septic thrombosis in critically ill patients: A retrospective case-control study
International Journal of Infectious Diseases Mar 08, 2020
Spaziante M, Giuliano S, Ceccarelli C, et al. - Given a lack of data on Gram-negative bacilli septic thrombosis (GN-ST) in ICU patients, researchers investigated 30-day mortality and clinical/microbiological features of GN-ST via performing a retrospective case-control study (matched 1:3) over a 15-month period on ICU patients with bacteremia associated (cases) or not (controls) to GN-ST. They analyzed 16 patients with GN-ST and 48 controls during the study period. The highest risk for this condition was observed among polytrauma patients in ICU. Targeted antibiotics plus anticoagulation is required in the optimal therapeutic approach. Observations support the essence of performing follow up blood cultures for establishing diagnosis and therapy duration.
