Gluten‐free diet in children with recent‐onset type 1 diabetes: A 12‐month intervention trial
Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism Mar 20, 2020
Neuman V, Pruhova S, Kulich M, et al. - This study was undertaken to determine if a gluten‐free diet (GFD) was correlated with the deceleration of the decline in beta‐cell capacity in non‐coeliac children with recently diagnosed type 1 diabetes. Forty‐five children, aged 10.2 ± 3.3 years, were enrolled into a self‐selected intervention trial: 26 started with a GFD within a median of 38 days postonset, while 19 stayed on a standard diet. Over the first year after diagnosis of type 1 diabetes, GFD was associated with improved HbA1c and a prolonged partial remission period. There was no significant difference between the groups in daily carbohydrate intake or the patients and their parents/caregivers reported in the quality of life. There was a suggestion of a gradual decline in C‐peptide but the correlation was not strong enough to draw any definitive conclusions.
