Glutathione infusion before primary percutaneous coronary intervention: A randomized controlled pilot study
BMJ Open Aug 15, 2019
Tanzilli G, Truscelli G, Arrivi A, et al. - Fifty consecutive individuals with ST-elevation myocardial infarction who were scheduled to undergo primary angioplasty were recruited in this study to see if the infusion of glutathione (GSH) prior to acute reoxygenation could counteract the harmful influences of higher H2O2 generation on myocardium. In comparison with placebo, a significant decrease of H2O2 production and 8-iso-PGF2α levels and a significant rise in H2O2 breakdown activity and nitric oxide bioavailability was discovered in the GSH group after acute reperfusion. Reduced production of H2O2 continued up to 5 days after the index procedure in treated individuals, and these variations were connected to those of the cardiactroponin T levels. The infusion of GSH appeared to trigger a rapid onset and persistent blunting of H2O2 generation enhancing myocardial cell survival.
