Global, regional, and national sepsis incidence and mortality, 1990–2017: analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study
The Lancet Feb 05, 2020
Rudd KE, Johnson SC, Agesa KM, et al. - This study was undertaken to assess the global, regional, and national incidence of sepsis and mortality from this disorder using data from the global burden of disease (GBD) 2017. The multiple cause-of-death data were applied from 109 million individual death records to estimate mortality related to sepsis among each of the 282 underlying causes of death in GBD 2017. Using mixed-effects linear regression, the percentage of sepsis-related deaths by underlying GBD cause in each location worldwide was modelled. In 2017, They recorded an estimated 48·9 million incident cases of sepsis worldwide and 11·0 million sepsis-related deaths were reported, describing 19·7% of all global deaths. Notwithstanding, failing age-standardized incidence and mortality, sepsis remains a major cause of health loss worldwide and has a primarily high health-related burden in sub-Saharan Africa.
