Global, regional, and national burden of suicide mortality 1990 to 2016: Systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2016
BMJ Feb 13, 2019
Naghavi M, et al. - Using estimates from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2016, researchers characterized suicide mortality patterns globally, regionally, and for 195 countries and territories, by age, sex, and socio-demographic index, from 1990 to 2016. The results of this systematic analysis indicated that age-standardized mortality suicide rates have greatly decreased since 1990, but suicide continues to be an important contributor to worldwide mortality. Findings revealed that greater decreases in mortality rates were seen in women. They observed that suicide mortality was variable across locations, between sexes, and between age groups. Strategies to prevent suicide can be targeted at vulnerable populations if they are informed by changes in mortality rates.
