Global incidence of and trends in intrahepatic and extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma from 1993 to 2012
Cancer Mar 12, 2020
Florio AA, Ferlay J, Znaor A, et al. - Since none of the investigations to date has assessed the global incidence as well as the trends of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinomas (ICCs) and extrahepatic cholangiocarcinomas (ECCs) with high-quality topography- and histology-specific cancer registry data, therefore, researchers assessed ICC and ECC incidence with the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents Plus database. They utilized regional and national cancer registry data for the estimation of age-standardized incidence rates (ASRs) per 100,000 person-years, 95% confidence intervals, and average annual percent changes, from 1993 to 2012, for ICC in 38 countries and for ECC in 33 countries. For ICC and ECC, the reported rates were the highest in Asia, particularly South Korea, Thailand, and Japan. In the 20 years examined, a rise in the incidence of ICC and ECC was reported in the majority of countries worldwide. During this time frame, the largest ASR increments were reported in Latvia and China for ICC and in Thailand and Colombia for ECC. It was noted that due to metabolic and infectious etiologic factors, a continuous rise may be seen in the incidence of ICC and ECC. Attempts to further explore risk factors adding to these increases in incidence are justified.
