Geographical distribution and prevalence of podoconiosis in Rwanda: A cross-sectional country-wide survey
The Lancet Global Health Apr 19, 2019
Deribe K, et al. - Researchers, for the first time, determined in Rwanda the national prevalence of podoconiosis, a variety of tropical lymphoedema causing massive swelling of the lower limbs. They invited all adults (aged ≥15 years) living in any of Rwanda's 30 districts for 10 years or more to participate at the household level. According to this population-based cross-sectional survey, despite the relatively low prevalence, throughout Rwanda, podoconiosis is widely distributed. Many patients are undiagnosed and there is scarce management of morbidity. To manage those affected, targeted interventions are required via a well-coordinated response by the health system.
