Kadri AN, Wilner B, Hernandez AV, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers described national and geographical trends in drug abuse (DA)-infective endocarditis (IE) using the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) registry from 2002 to 2016, as well as compared patient features and outcomes in DA-IE to those with non-DA-IE. Investigators found that DA-IE incidence has nearly doubled between 2002 and 2016 All US regions have been affected, and DA-IE hospitalizations in the Midwest have had the highest increase. The most affected were young-adult, poor, white males.
