Genetic predictors of circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D and prognosis after colorectal cancer
Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention Mar 24, 2020
Neumeyer S, Butterbach K, Banbury BL, et al. - Given that a consistent link of low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels with higher mortality in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients has been shown in observational studies, but there is a lack of clarity if low 25(OH)D levels directly impact CRC mortality, and to minimize bias, researchers utilized genetic variants related to vitamin D levels to assess the link with overall and CRC-specific survival. They utilized data from the International Survival Analysis in Colorectal Cancer Consortium. They identified poorer CRC-specific survival related to the 25(OH)D decreasing allele of single nucleotide polymorphism rs2282679 (GC), although not significant following multiple-testing correction. For the link of genetic predisposition of lower vitamin D levels with increased overall or CRC-specific survival, little evidence was gained through this study, although power might have been an issue.
