Gender differences in cardiovascular risk related to diabetes and posttraumatic stress disorder
The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry Sep 28, 2018
Gibson CJ, et al. - In this national retrospective cohort study of veterans aged ≥ 55 years (n=2,789,264), researchers examined whether comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) augments diabetes-related cardiovascular (CVD) risk, and if these relationships differed between men and women. Associations between PTSD and diabetes were analyzed using sex-stratified Fine-Gray proportional hazards models, which were adjusted for demographics and medical comorbidities. Findings showed that PTSD and diabetes increased the risk of CVD, and this risk was strongly increased with comorbid PTSD-diabetes. Further, PTSD and diabetes conferred equivalent CVD risk among women vs men.
