Gastric bypass vs sleeve gastrectomy in patients with type 2 diabetes (Oseberg): A single-centre, triple-blind, randomised controlled trial
The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology Nov 28, 2019
Hofsø D, Fatima F, Borgeraas H, et al. - Comparison of the efficacy of the two most common bariatric procedures (gastric bypass vs sleeve gastrectomy) in remitting diabetes and β-cell function was performed. In this single-center, triple-blind, randomized trial, researchers randomly assigned (1:1) 109 patients (aged ≥ 18 years) with type 2 diabetes and obesity to receive gastric bypass (n = 54) or sleeve gastrectomy (n = 55) (the Oseberg study) at Vestfold Hospital Trust (Tønsberg, Norway). Outcomes revealed the superiority of gastric bypass vs sleeve gastrectomy in terms of achieving remission of type 2 diabetes at 1 year after surgery. They observed the similar beneficial effects of the two procedures on β-cell function. Based on findings, they suggest preferring gastric bypass use for patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes for improving diabetes care and reducing related societal costs.
