Gabapentin improves symptoms of functional dyspepsia in a retrospective, open-label cohort study
Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology Apr 10, 2019
Staller K, et al. - Among an observational cohort of patients, researchers identified the effectiveness of gabapentin in the treatment of functional dyspepsia. Change in total Patient Assessment of Gastrointestinal Disorders-Symptom Severity Index (PAGI-SYM) score between initial and subsequent visits was the primary endpoint. Pregabapentin and postgabapentin surveys were completed by 62 patients with functional dyspepsia of 110 patients enrolled. Investigators found that the mean PAGI-SYM score of subjects decreased by 0.44 with significant changes in all subscales (including upper abdominal pain, lower abdominal pain, postprandial fullness) except bloating. Overall, they concluded that significant improvements were observed in dyspeptic symptoms interpreted within the limitations of open-label study design in a retrospective, open-label cohort of patients treated with gabapentin for functional dyspepsia.
