Functional outcome of implant removal following fracture fixation below the level of the knee: A prospective cohort study
The Bone & Joint Journal Apr 04, 2019
Sanders FRK, et al. - Researchers determined the functional outcome in 179 patients (18 to 75 years) who underwent implant removal (IR) after fracture fixation below the level of the knee in this WIFI (Wound Infections Following Implant Removal Below the Knee) trial, performed in 17 teaching hospitals and two university hospitals in The Netherlands. Findings revealed no achievement of minimal clinically important difference despite achieving statistically significant improvement of functional outcome following IR. This suggests that no clinically relevant improvement in functional outcome could be achieved with IR. In view of these results together with the high complication rate, researchers emphasize the significance of carefully reviewing the indication for IR.
