Frequency, trends and institutional variation in 30‐day all‐cause mortality and unplanned readmissions following hospitalisation for heart failure in Australia and New Zealand

European Journal of Heart Failure Nov 18, 2020

Labrosciano C, Horton D, Air T, et al. - Researchers assessed the frequency, trends as well as institutional difference in 30‐day death and unplanned readmission rates following heart failure (HF) hospitalisations in Australia and New Zealand. Participants were patients > 18 years hospitalised with HF at all public and most private hospitals from 2010–15. Findings revealed that death of one in 10 patients and an unplanned readmission in almost a quarter of those who survived were reported within 30 days of a HF hospitalisation. Among hospitals, there was a wide variation in the risk of these outcomes, indicating differences in HF care quality. Over the study span, the occurrence of a substantial reduction in 30‐day death and a modest reduction in readmissions was documented.
