Frailty predicts medical complications, length of stay, readmission, and mortality in revision hip and knee arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty Mar 14, 2019
Traven S, et al. - Between 2005 and 2016, researchers assessed 13,948 subjects undergoing revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) and 16,304 cases undergoing revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) to estimate the predicting factors of postoperative complications, readmission, and mortality among such cases. They reported the 5-factor modified frailty index (mFI-5) a substantial predictor for severe medical complications like cardiac arrest, myocardial infarction, septic shock, pulmonary embolism, postoperative dialysis, reintubation, and prolonged ventilator requirement. They also noticed the benefits of mFI-5 in predicting the total length of stay, discharge to a facility, readmission, and mortality.
