Fracture liaison service and mortality in elderly hip fracture patients: A prospective cohort study
Osteoporosis International Sep 18, 2019
González-Quevedo D, et al. - Via a prospective cohort study on 724 patients over 60 years of age who suffered a hip fracture during two consecutive years, prior to and following the implementation of the Fracture Liaison Service (FLS), experts investigated the impact of the FLS model over the first-year mortality rates after a hip fracture. Anti-osteoporotic drugs were more commonly prescribed following FLS implementation. A total of 74 and 92 patients following FLS implementation and prior to the FLS implementation, respectively, died during the follow-up period. In 17 patients following FLS implementation and 13 individuals prior to FLS implementation, a second fracture occurred. Patients who were treated with anti-osteoporotic drugs following the implementation of the FLS protocol had lower 1-year mortality in comparison with patients managed prior to the implementation of the FLS protocol. In conclusion, notable 1-year-mortality variations after a hip fracture between patients treated before the implementation of an FLS protocol and patients treated following its implementation were not seen. The application of the FLS did not influence the risk of suffering a second osteoporotic fracture. Nonetheless, patients treated with anti-osteoporotic drugs in an FLS context had a lower mortality rate in contrast with patients managed former to the implementation of the FLS.
