Five-year clinical and echocardiographic outcomes from the Nordic Aortic Valve Intervention (NOTION) randomized clinical trial in lower surgical risk patients
Circulation Feb 07, 2019
Thyregod HGH, et al. - Researchers sought to present clinical and echocardiographic results after 5 years of the Nordic Aortic Valve Intervention (NOTION) that was intended to assess transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) vs surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) in patients 70 years old or more with isolated severe aortic valve stenosis. The data represent the longest follow-up data assessing TAVR vs SAVR in lower risk patients. At three Nordic centers, patients were randomized 1:1 to TAVR using the self-expanding CoreValve prosthesis (n=145) or SAVR using any stented bio-prostheses (n=135). Major clinical outcomes 5 years after TAVR with a self-expanding prosthesis were not statistically different from those noted in SAVR. Following TAVR, they found higher rates of prosthetic regurgitation and pacemaker implantation.
