Financial incentives for achieving and maintaining viral suppression among HIV-positive adults in Uganda: A randomized controlled trial
The Lancet HIV Mar 10, 2019
Thirumurthy H, et al. - Via performing a randomized controlled trial in four rural Ugandan parishes, researchers investigated how time-limited financial incentives influence viral suppression among HIV-positive adults in rural Uganda. Between June 27, 2016, and May 25, 2018, they enrolled 400 adults in the study, of whom 203 were randomly assigned to the financial incentive intervention and 197 to the control group. Outcomes suggest that among HIV-positive adults, no influence of financial incentives on viral suppression was noted. They noted high viral suppression among participants which may be due to high baseline viral suppression and provision of viral load results. Findings emphasize the necessity for interventions that may improve achievement of viral suppression among unsuppressed individuals.
