Fiberoptic intubation of severely obese patients through supraglottic airway: A prospective, randomized trial of the Ambu AuraGain laryngeal mask vs the i-gel airway
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Aug 17, 2018
Moser B, et al. - Researchers performed this randomized prospective trial to investigate whether time for intubation through the AuraGain laryngeal mask vs the i-gel laryngeal mask is 10 seconds faster in severely obese patients. They found that time for intubation through both supraglottic airway devices was similar. On a mean body mass index (BMI) of 39.4 kg/m2 in the AuraGain group vs 38.9 kg/m2 in i-gel group, the observed mean (SD) intubation time was 55.7 (5.8) seconds for the AuraGain vs 54.1 (8.5) for i-gel mask, respectively. Both supraglottic airway devices offered fast possibility of securing the airway, and therefore, both, AuraGain and i-gel, can be a good alternative in the airway management in obese patients.
