Fiber intake predicts weight loss and dietary adherence in adults consuming calorie-restricted diets: The POUNDS Lost (Preventing Overweight Using Novel Dietary Strategies) Study
The Journal of Nutrition Jun 13, 2019
Miketinas DC, et al. - Using data from the Preventing Overweight Using Novel Dietary Strategies (POUNDS) Lost Study—a randomized trial that assessed the impact of calorie-restricted diets varying in macronutrient composition on adult weight loss—researchers examined the value of dietary fiber for predicting weight loss in participants who consumed calorie-restricted diets (−750 kcal/d from estimated energy needs) for 6 months. At baseline and 6 months, participants provided dietary records (n=345; 53.9% female). For the full sample, mean ± SD age was 52.5 ± 8.7 years, and body mass index was 32.6 ± 3.9 kg/m2. According to findings, weight loss and dietary adherence in overweight or obese adults consuming a calorie-restricted diet were promoted by dietary fiber consumption, independently of macronutrient and caloric intake.
