Female-specific risk factors associated with risk of ACO (asthma COPD overlap) in Aboriginal people

Journal of Asthma Jun 18, 2019

Koleade A, et al. - Researchers investigated the female-specific risk factors related to Asthma-COPD Overlap (ACO) in Aboriginal people. Data on employment, education, health status, housing, family background and income were obtained in the 2012 Aboriginal Peoples Survey 2012 (N = 28,410). ACO prevalence was 1.65% in males and 3.53% in females. Increased age, living in Quebec, living in a rented dwelling and dwelling in need of major repairs were the factors that showed significant relation to an increased risk of ACO in both genders. Females not males demonstrated a significant association of four factors [including marital status (being widowed, separated, or divorced), smoking status (being a current daily smoker), having a diagnosis of diabetes and working 40 h and over a week] with increased risk of ACO.
