Fatty acid and retinol-binding protein: A novel antigen for immunodiagnosis of human strongyloidiasis
PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Jul 26, 2019
Masoori L, et al. - Given that there is no established diagnostic laboratory test to rule out human strongyloidiasis, researchers sought to design more specific diagnostic approaches. They generated a recombinant form of fatty acid and retinol-binding protein (FAR), which has a crucial role in the development and reproduction of nematodes and ascertained if it could be used for immunodiagnosis of Strongyloides stercoralis. The complementary DNA coding was cloned for the fatty acid and retinol-binding protein of S. stercoralis (SsFAR), the full-length sequence was obtained, and expressed as a recombinant antigen (rSsFAR) in bacteria. As per observations, consideration could be given to SsFAR protein as an alternative diagnostic tool in ELISA for the detection of S. stercoralis infections, as it showed sensitivity of 100% and specificity and 97%. Finally, in addition to the possible applications in immunodiagnosis, SsFAR, being an immunodominant antigen, could be used in vaccinology studies against S. stercoralis infections.
