Factors associated with alcohol use before sex among HIV-negative female sex workers in Zambia
International Journal of STD & AIDS Feb 04, 2020
Malama K, Sagaon-Teyssier L, Parker R, et al. - As alcohol use prior to sex can increase the risk of HIV infection among female sex workers (FSWs), researchers sought the factors linked with having sex under the influence of alcohol among Zambian FSWs. Recruitment of 331 HIV-negative FSWs in Lusaka and Ndola was done. FSWs were inquired in a cross-sectional survey addressing how often they had sex under the influence of alcohol in the previous month; the responses were then categorised as ‘always’ and ‘not always’. Higher adjusted odds ratios of always having sex under the impact of alcohol were reported among FSWs who charged clients medium and low fees for sex vs high fees; took 9–19 and 20 or more clients per month vs up to 8 clients per month; and never used condoms vs always used condoms with clients. In view of these findings, they emphasize complementing interventions for financial empowerment and alcohol risk reduction with existing HIV prevention interventions for FSWs.
