Factors and outcomes associated with inpatient cardiac arrest following emergent endotracheal intubation
Resuscitation Oct 19, 2017
Wardi G, et al. - This study entailed an identification of the risk factors related to peri-intubation cardiac arrest (PICA) among hospitalized patients emergently intubated out of the operating room. A comparison was also pursued of the PICA to other types of inpatient cardiac arrest (CA). It was observed that the patients' outcomes following PICA were comparable to other causes of inpatient CA. A tie-up was noted between potentially modifiable factors with PICA. Hemodynamic resuscitation, optimized staffing strategies, and possible avoidance of succinylcholine exhibited a connection with decreased risk of PICA. In order to detect the effective interventions to prevent this potentially avoidable type of CA, clinical trials testing targeted strategies to optimize peri-intubation care were necessitated.
