Extragenital gonorrhea and chlamydia among men and women according to type of sexual exposure
Sexually Transmitted Diseases Apr 18, 2019
Bamberger DM, et al. - As per current guidelines, only men having sex with men (MSM) are recommended to be screened for extragenital gonorrhea (GC) and chlamydia (CT), so researchers examined the prevalence of extragenital CG and CT in people who engaged in extragenital sexual activity attending a sexually transmitted diseases clinic. In all patients who engaged in extragenital sexual activity, they performed nucleic acid amplification testing for GC and CT at pharyngeal, rectal, and urogenital sites. While MSM displayed highest extragenital GC and CT rates of infection, women having sex with men (WSM) and men having sex with women (MSW) also had these infections, bringing light to an unrecognized disease burden.
