Extracellular matrix components indicate remodelling activity in different fibrosis stages of human non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
Histopathology Jul 11, 2018
Munsterman ID, et al. - The proportion of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) and activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and tissue inhibitors of MMPs (TIMPs) in human non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) liver tissue with respect to severity of inflammation and fibrosis was examined in this analysis. By NAFLD activity score and grading assignment, histopathological features were quantified. Researchers reported that advanced human NAFLD-fibrosis had a distinct extracellular matrix components (ECM) composition with increased HSCs and increased TIMP inhibition. However, there was also an ongoing remodelling activity of MMP-2.
