Extra-haematological manifestations related to human parvovirus B19 infection: Retrospective study in 25 adults
BMC Infectious Diseases Jul 12, 2018
Dollat M, et al. - A nationwide multicentre study was undertaken to retrospectively describe the characteristics and outcome of extra-haematological manifestations related to human parvovirus B19 (HPV-B19) infection in French adults. Findings suggest considering HPV-B19 infection in a wide range of clinical manifestations. The most common manifestations included joint (80%) and skin (60%) involvement, followed by renal involvement (endocapillary proliferative or membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis) in 16% and peripheral nervous system involvement (mononeuritis, mononeuritis multiplex, Guillain-Barré syndrome) in 12%. Muscle involvement was noted in 8%. Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, myopericarditis and pleural effusion, and lymphadenopathy and splenomegaly mimicking lymphoma with spleen infarcts were identified as the other manifestations. The patients frequently (56.5%) displayed immunological abnormalities. Despite a good prognosis, they recommend discussing intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) therapy in patients with peripheral nerve involvement. Its efficacy, however, needs to be further investigated in prospective studies.
