External cephalic version at term: A cohort study of 18 years’ experience
BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Feb 16, 2019
Melo P, et al. - Researchers performed a retrospective cohort study of prospectively collected data from a major university hospital, UK, to examine the outcome of referrals for external cephalic version (ECV). They identified 3008 women with the confirmed breech presentation; 2614 of these underwent ECV. One hundred seventeen breech presentations (3.9%) were ineligible for ECV, and there were 297 eligible women (10.2%) who declined it. Successful ECV was noted in 1280 (49.0%) (40% in nulliparous women; 64% in others); 1234 (97.3%) were cephalic at birth. Outcomes suggest a low complication rate of external cephalic version. Furthermore, it is effective for most breech presentations, enabling vaginal birth and avoiding caesarean section.
