Evolving symptom characteristics of Raynaud's phenomenon in systemic sclerosis and their association with physician and patient-reported assessments of disease severity
Arthritis Care & Research Jul 11, 2019
Pauling JD, et al. - In this cross-sectional study at UK and US sites, researchers studied 107 patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) to determine the clinical associations of SSc-Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) symptom features and the evolution of SSc-RP symptoms with disease progression. In addition to digital color changes of SSc-RP, they focused on patients’ capability to identify with diagrammatic representations (and descriptive stems) of 4 different theoretical SSc-RP patterns (progressing severity A through D) indicating progressively severe SSc-RP experiences. They found that patients could identify with distinct patterns of SSc-RP, which could be associated with the progress of the obliterative microangiopathy of SSc. Diary-based approaches to evaluating SSc-RP could be influenced by the difficulty differentiating discrete SSc-RP attacks from persistent digital ischemia in patients with advanced SSc.
